Typically in the month of May, the main weather threat turns to severe weather, especially across the Southern Plains. While we do have the threat for severe weather the next several days, we will also get a signficant late season snow storm across Colorado.
Severe Threat and Heavy Rain
Monday’s severe threat is a level 2 out of 5, when the main risk being damaging winds:

Storms will increase in coverage late Monday afternoon and last well into the overnight hours. The below future radar is from 5 pm CT Mon night to 7 am CT Tue am:

This will set the stage for Tuesday’s severe threat to be a little further south but also a level 2 out of 5 risk:

The threat will then continue further south and east for Wednesday, bringing the potential for severe storms from Texas to Alabama:

While severe weather is never wanted, these storms will bring much needed rain across the Southeast. The below forecast is from Wed am to Fri am:

Colorado Snow
We’ve discussed the lack of snowfall across Colorado extensively this year. The good news is the same system causing the severe weather and rain across the Southeast will first bring impressive snow totals across the Rockies. Feet of snow will fall across the foothills of the Rockies and significant snow is also expected across the Denver metro area:

This snow will fall from Tue evening through Wednesday afternoon. Due to the late season and warm weather so far this year, many trees in the area are already full of leaves. Look at the difference in the leaf coverage between last year at this time and now:

The heavy, wet snow on the leaves could lead to power outages and travel will be difficult, especially Tuesday night in Wednesday morning.
